Identifying Clogged Sewer Lines

One of the common problems that can wreak havoc on a home's plumbing is a clogged sewer line. Clogged sewer lines can occur for a variety of reasons, but once they are noticed, they have to be dealt with quickly to avoid the clog leading to additional problems like a sewer line leak or a backup. These problems never magically solve themselves, so professionals must be called to clear sewer lines with drain cleaning services. Here are some of the most common signs that can indicate a clogged sewer line.

Strange Noises or Smells

bad smellSewer systems are designed to allow wastewater and sewage to drain away from a property quickly and safely. Strange sounds or gurgling noises during draining can indicate a clog in the line, blocking the flow of wastewater. Dealing with the clog before it gets worse can prevent additional problems down the road.

Similar to unusual noises, drains should have no foul odors. There are components designed to prevent sewer gasses from leaking back into the home. When the smell of sewer gasses or sewage is noticed in the home, it is often a sign that water and sewage aren’t flowing freely through piping due to a clog. Scheduling drain cleaning can remove the clogs and nasty smells and give the sewer system a much-needed reset.

Water and Sewage Backups

Another sign of a sewer line clog is backed-up drains and toilets. Backed-up toilets, sinks, and tubs can be a telltale sign of a sewer line clog or a collapsed line. This blockage stops the normal flow of water and waste to the sewer system, causing it to reverse direction and come back up through household drains.

Causes for sewer line clogs are varied, including the buildup of grease, hair, or other debris, tree roots growing into and disturbing the pipes, and even damaged sewer lines that collapse can cause backups and other signs of clogs. Call a plumber to clear any clogs and inspect the sewer lines for damage if backups occur.

Water Drains Slowly

bathtubBefore a sewer line clog gets blocked completely, it will almost always be partially blocked for some time. This is when it may exhibit signs like gurgling noises, but another sign may accompany this. A partial clog can cause water in sinks and bathtubs to drain slowly or, in the case of toilets, flush slowly.

If the clog is severe, it may prevent the water from draining and create a pool of standing water in sinks and tubs. Calling a plumber to address clogs quickly with a drain auger or hydro jetting will prevent additional issues and restore proper drainage. So, call a professional immediately if any signs of sewer line clogs are noticed.
